Hebrews 4:12

Are You Listening?

It is with great excitement that this family watches the fresh and clean water come out of the newly drilled well.  For many years they had walked a long distance to get good water, but now all they have to do is pump the handle.

Is it not true that many times our prayers are like this?  We spend a great deal of our time praying that God would change people and circumstances and totally miss what He desires to do in our life.  We become so focused on others that we fail to see that God is most concerned about working in our lives and changing us.

It is certain that one cannot and will not change until they change.  One of the great traps that believers must avoid is thinking, responding, and behaving as they have always done.  In some devious way, we become convinced that we are alright and the rest of the world needs to change when in fact, God is moving in our heart, mind, and life circumstances to change us.  We easily become centered on all the things that we believe God should do in others that we miss what He is bringing to focus in our own life that needs to be changed in obedience to His leading.  (I Samuel 15:22)

We should never stop praying for others, but obedience to God’s moving in our life is of utmost importance.  Oswald Chambers said, “It is not so true that prayer changes things as that prayer changes me and I change things.”

Are we listening or too busy focusing on what we think others should do?
