The Best Remedy

At this time of year, allergies affect many people. Sneezing, coughing are watery eyes are the daily companions of millions who are subject to various allergic reactions. The allergic reactions can be so annoying that people are willing to try about anything. Suggested remedies may vary from a new pill developed recently to a concoction that grandma used many years ago. Well, sometimes the remedy works, and sometimes it does not.  The following remedy does not relate to allergies, but it does “work.” If applied carefully with the right motives, this remedy brings drastic change.

Just as seasonal allergies affect multitudes, the “disease” of self-focus causes many to be unproductive, critical, isolated and even depressed. Continual “self-focus” has many effects on the people involved, and their minds are bound in a state of thinking and acting selfishly.

But wait! There is a remedy! That’s right! A Biblical remedy for this condition exists. As followers of Christ, we have the great joy of being God’s representative to share His love with others. We are reminded in the Scripture to be light and salt by encouraging, helping, investing, caring and loving people. There is great joy and blessing that comes from sharing with the least of these (Matthew 25), being God’s hand to the poor (Proverbs 19:17) or caring for the fatherless and widows (James 1:27). These passages remind us that investing, caring, sharing and reaching out to others are commands of our Lord and bring great blessings to obedient believers.

The remedy could be just a simple word of encouragement, thanks or help Proverbs 25:11). Whatever form it takes, the great remedy for self-centered and self-focused thinking is to reach out to others. Of course, we must remember that this negative and paralyzing attitude is sin and must be admitted and confessed to God as sin. Then we can take aggressive steps to get the mind and heart focused on being a representative of God to needy, hurting, abused, hungry and desperate people.

As we reach out to other believers, it is our great joy to be an encouragement and blessing to them. As we reach out to those who do not know the Lord, the door opens for effective, personal and powerful sharing of the Good News of salvation through Christ.

Are you depressed, self-focused, isolated and in a bad mood? Make some changes. Invest in OTHERS, become God’s representative to those in need, and your heart and mind will change. Take a few moments now to read through the great hymn Make Me a Blessing, commit yourself to be a blessing to others, and get your focus off of yourself. This remedy works!
