The Best Advice

Sometime many years ago along my life journey, a wise and helpful person said, “If you read one chapter of Proverbs daily, it will change your life.” Well they were right. What a blessing, help and encouragement for life it is to be in the book of Proverbs each day.

One of the basic instructions of Proverbs is to “live in the fear of God,” which is the great key for a life of meaning and usefulness to our Lord. But that is only the beginning. Proverbs is like a cup running over with delicious beverage, and the person who drinks from this cup will never be the same. In just a few minutes each day, you can read through a chapter of Proverbs. If you read a chapter each day, you will read through the book each month. Wow! What a fantastic investment of a few minutes. You will find direction, wisdom, warning, basic instructions for life, protection, godly insights, cautions, and so much more. The wisdom of Proverbs opens the eyes of the soul and gives light for the journey. It provides understanding of life, insights into the encounters of life, reminders of caution, and rewards for the obedient and those who walk in “the fear of God.”

That’s right! In just a few minutes each day, you will get all of this and MUCH MORE. For the word of God is “quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit…” (Hebrews 4:12). There is no other investment of time that is more important than spending a few minutes each day in the Word of God, especially in Proverbs. It’s really not a sacrifice of time to do this, but it is a good investment of your time which will reap unbelievable dividends in your life as you READ and OBEY the Word.

Think how much time is wasted in a day because we lack understanding, wisdom, direction, vision and so much more that God desires that we know and practice daily. God is so concerned about His children that He gives light on the simplest things of life and shows how to gain wisdom from even an ant. From the appointment with the ant, Proverbs includes wisdom on how to determine the right path of life and great words of caution to not walk in the way of those who ignore and reject God’s ways.

My advice to you is to take a few minutes each day and read a chapter of Proverbs. Just look at the date, read the chapter for the day, and you will work your way through the book in a month. On the months with only 30 days, read 2 chapters on one of the days. As your read, mark and highlight thoughts and important words that seem to “jump” off the page and grab your attention. You may even check your column reference in the Bible and read other verses that pertain to that subject. After reading the chapter, it is good to write down the key thoughts or lessons that you gleaned for the day. If you really want to reap great results and learn much more, write down a couple selected lessons in a simple form and pass them along to your children, friends, or co-laborers.

Here’s another idea. Write out what God has brought to your attention or a lesson he is teaching you and put it on your Facebook page. You need not try to preach a sermon but just give a simple thought and encourage your friends to get into this powerful and life-changing book of Proverbs.

Have a great day each day as you begin with Proverbs. We have all heard mom say, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” A chapter of Proverbs has great instructions and wisdom for the one who will READ and OBEY. Remember James 1:22 reminds us to be more than hearers of the Word; we are to be doers of the Word.
